Optimizing Your Site for Search Engines

There’s a lot of debate about what works for search engine optimization and what doesn’t. This post explains the basic tips that you can apply to your Soholaunch website now (and won’t get you in trouble with the search engine powers that be). The tips not only apply to search engines, but also make your site more usable for your site vistors. The more technical term for these tips are “on-page” optimizations.

Maximize template features

Many built-in Soholaunch templates allow you to add a logo/title line and slogan (which usually show up in the header) and also footer info. Fill out as many fields as you can under Settings in the Template manager. This makes your website more descriptive to both visitors and search engines.

Fill out your pages' descriptions and titles

Make sure you have the default title and description filled out in Search Engine Optimization in the Webmaster area. Search engines use this information to understand your site better, and it has long been a best practice. The titles and descriptions you enter may also show up in search engine results.

You can also fill out the title and description for individual pages in the Page Properties area.

Use descriptive page names

Soholaunch adds page names to the end to your website address in a very clean way. Use this to your advantage. Search engines and real people appreciate page names that are easy to understand and describe the page’s content. So don’t use generic page names like page 1 or page 2. Describe the page. For example, if it’s your company’s mission page, use “Our Mission” or “Our Promise”. And that will turn into example.com/Our_Mission.php. Pretty cool, huh?

Apply heading tags rather than bigger font

Soholaunch’s text editor lets you format text with header tags, like h1, h2, h3 etc. For headers, this is more descriptive than making the text font a bigger pixel size. To add the heading tag, highlight the text and use the paragraph format drop-down menu to select the heading type. Heading tags help search engines understand the structure of the page better and prioritize its content. It also helps visitors skim content because text is chunked up into sections.

Validate with Google Webmaster Tools

Get your site validated with Google Webmaster Tools so Google will let you know of any obvious problems that they see. When their crawlers come across any issues on your site, Google states they will let you know about them in the Google Webmasters dashboard. Crawlers are automated programs that act like real website visitors. Search engines use them to view the content on your site and store your pages for the search index.
